E-bikes and Insurance

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) have become increasingly popular across Ontario as an eco-friendly, convenient and affordable mode of transportation. These bikes feature a small electric motor to assist with pedalling. Ontario law classifies most e-bikes as “power-assisted bicycles” provided they meet specific criteria, such as a maximum speed of 32 km/h on level ground and a motor output not exceeding 500 watts. Riders must be at least 16 years old and wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet. At present, e-bikes do not require vehicle registration, a driver’s licence, or licence plates, making them accessible to a broad segment of the population.

When it comes to insurance, Ontario does not require e-bike owners to carry auto or liability insurance for their bikes. This lack of mandatory insurance means that riders may not be covered for personal injuries or third-party liability in the event of an accident. Some homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policies may offer limited coverage for theft or damage, but riders should check with their insurance providers to confirm the extent of this protection. When an accident occurs involving a motor vehicle and an e-bike where the other driver is at fault, the operator of the e-bike may be able to sue and recover damages arising from their injuries.
