Retired Gander teacher acquitted of assault charges against former students

A retired Gander teacher accused of sexual offences against former students dating back to the 1970s and 1980s has been acquitted.

Kenneth Wayne Oates of Clarenville was a teacher at Gander Collegiate.

In May 2024 the RCMP charged him with one count each of indecent assault and gross indecency.

Oates was arrested alongside his former colleague Wayne Hurley of Bay Roberts. Both men are in their 70s.

Hurley was charged with four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault. His next court date is Feb. 25 in Gander.

The charges involve four complainants, all women who were teenagers at the time of the alleged offences.

One complainant came forward in 2021 which prompted an investigation, and the others came forward in 2022.
