A sexual abuse victim is filing a civil lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, and the priest that is convicted of abusing him.

While the abuse took place when he was 14-years old, Alex says it's only now that he feels strong enough to do what he calls the right thing.

"And that's confront it to hit it head-on, in a sense, and deal with it in the best way that I know how so I can rid myself as best as I can of the negative emotions," Alex told CFRA News.

Alex was one of seven children Father Dale Crampton was convicted of abusing in 1987.

The statement of claim was filed today and Alex says he hopes it goes to trial so the public will know what happened.

How to be Successful at Mediation

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution. It is a means for people to settle disputes or lawsuits outside of court. Most people don’t want to go to court. A neutral third party—the mediator—helps the disputing parties look for a solution that works for them. Mediators, unlike judges, do not decide the case. The mediator's role is simply to help the people involved in a dispute to negotiate with each other in a constructive manner, to gain a better understanding of the interests of all parties, and to find a resolution based on common understanding and mutual agreement.
